There is nothing quite like the sweet smell and taste of coffee in the morning. But, is it okay to drink a cup every day?
Coffee is the most drank beverage in the world, in fact, 54% of Americans drink coffee daily. So there is a good chance you are one them.
Many people drink coffee for energy or because they love the taste. But did you know it actually offers many health benefits?
Let’s take a look at 10 reasons enjoying coffee on a daily basis is a good thing. Some of these will no doubt surprise you.
1. Reduce Your Risk Of Developing Diabetes
With over 9% of American’s now have diagnosed with diabetes, it is a major health issue. The number one factor behind its development is poor diet and bad lifestyle choices.
Drinking coffee reduces your risk of developing diabetes. You don’t want to drink too much coffee in a day, as that itself is a poor lifestyle choice. But, drinking a couple of cups daily is certainly okay.
Scientists at Harvard School of Public Health evaluated data from 128,000 healthcare professionals. These professionals were surveyed about their diet choices for more than 20 years.
During those two decades, 7,300 of them were diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. But the ones who drank more than one cup of coffee daily, had an 11% lower risk for the disease.
2. Prevention of Cavities
One main health benefit of coffee is that it decreases tooth decay. This is one that really surprised me!
Several studies have shown that roasted coffee beans are antibacterial against S. mutans. This is the bacteria that causes tooth decay.
Studies also show that roasted coffee prevents the absorption of bad bacteria by the teeth. The studies used various types of coffee beans – roasted/unroasted, Arabica/Robusta.
They all provided similar benefits except when it came to teeth. The roasted varieties were more active in preventing bacteria from sticking to them.
3. Reduces Risk Of Developing Alzheimer’s
The cases of Alzheimer’s disease are growing at a scary rate. But there are many preventative measures you can take to lower your risk and drinking coffee is one of them.
4. Improves Your Mood
Coffee contains caffeine, a nootropic that improves your mood and cognitive functioning. In short, it makes you more alert, while also boosting your mood.
This is especially noticeable if you’ve been drinking coffee each day for a year and suddenly stop. You might experience a downshift in your mood and how you feel. Only by drinking a coffee are you able to raise your spirits.
5. Good For Your Liver
Avoid alcohol and drink more coffee is the advice here. While the former can damage your liver beyond repair, the latter just wants to protect it.
6. Could Prevent Skin Cancer
Skin cancer is now one of the fastest growing cancers in the world. Unfortunately, more and more people are being diagnosed with it each year.
There are things you can do to cut your risk, and this includes drinking more coffee.
There are scientific theories that caffeine can reduce skin cancer risk. A final conclusion has not been reached and it is definitely not a replacement for being sun smart. Just another good reason to enjoy coffee.
7. Improves Your Heart Health
We’re always told that coffee is bad for our heart.
True, too much coffee is bad for your heart. If you drank 30 cups a day, as the great French writer Balzac reportedly did, you are putting yourself at massive risk of having a heart attack. .
But, if you drink coffee each day in moderation, you can actually improve the health of your heart.
8. Strengthens Your DNA
You might be wondering why you’d need to strengthen your DNA. Here is why…
“DNA damage is responsible for creating cancer cells, cell damage in the brain, increased inflammation in the body, and decreased activity in our organs.” Source
DNA strands get damaged and can break. One way to prevent this happening all too often,is drink more coffee. Caffeine tightens DNA integrity and wards off potential damage
9. Rich In Antioxidants
Antioxidants are your body’s first line of defense against rogue free radicals. These radicals can cause a lot of silent damage to your body.
Coffee contains more antioxidants than many fruits, including oranges and grapes.
10. Help You Live Longer
This is best summarised by Ming Ding, M.D. from Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in Boston, Massachusetts:
“Bioactive compounds in coffee reduce insulin resistance and systematic inflammation. They might be responsible for the inverse association between coffee and mortality. However, more studies are needed to investigate the biological mechanisms producing these effects.”
This study showed that it isn’t just the caffeine providing health benefits, but possibly also the naturally occurring compounds found in coffee beans.
So these are 10 good reasons to drink coffee each day. But as with anything, moderation is the key and if you overdo it, the benefits are likely to be negated. 2-3 cups of coffee a day will certainly do you no harm.
Now, where’s the barista?
